Goodreads Summary:

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

My Thoughts:

It is so nice to know that there are new ideas still out there. It feels nice to know that even though the themes, ideas and even setting have been used a hundred times there are still stories to find. It just seems that Hollywood has run out of new ideas and keeps redoing all these classics that it makes me wonder if we have no original things left in us. And the answer is YES! We still do. And this is one of those original works! Although the themes, ideas, settings have been done before they haven’t been done like this. And they haven’t been done this well.

I will admit Laia…I wanted to smack her. A lot. Shake her a little. Smack her some more. And then I realized that I would have done exactly everything (in the exact order she did them) plus she also wanted to smack herself. So, she did redeem herself. Although, I did want to smack her for wanting to smack herself, Maybe I just have issues? Who knows. Anyway, there was a lot of want of smacking going on when I realized that I would have been her and then I didn’t mind her so much.

And of course there were hot guys! Hot guys for everyone! Hot guys for you! And you! And you! Oh and you. And even a lonely hot girl for the young men reading this book! Your welcome! No one is excluded in this book! Hot people for everyone! Oh except they grew up killing everyone and everything so they’re really messed up in the head and yeah you probably don’t want to go there. Unless you know…you need someone killed or something.

Oh…and there’s magical beings and Djinn and stuff. It’s pretty neat-o. A little messed up. Especially, for the characters. But it’s original and I might be a little messed up, because I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Read this and let me know what you think! It’s messed up. I promise. But it’s dystopian, it’s supposed to be. So…read it anyway. Because it’s original and fantastic!

Auf Wiedersehen!
